How to Sell a Home with Pets: Tips for Pet Owners

For many of us, pets are part of the family. But when it’s time to sell your home, those furry family members can present a few unique challenges. From lingering odors to pet hair to potential buyer allergies, even the most lovable pets can affect how your home shows—and sells.

As a dedicated Realtor and a proud pet owner myself, I understand both the emotional and practical sides of this situation. Here are my top tips for successfully selling your home while keeping your pets (and potential buyers) happy.

1. Deep Clean Everything

First impressions are everything in real estate. Even if your pet is well-behaved, buyers may pick up on fur, odors, or stains that you’ve grown used to.

  • Vacuum daily—especially upholstery, rugs, and pet beds.

  • Wash pet bedding, toys, and litter boxes regularly.

  • Use air purifiers and pet-safe deodorizers to keep the air fresh.

  • Consider professional cleaning—especially for carpets and sofas.

Tamas’ Tip: I always tell sellers: "If you can smell your pet, buyers definitely can." A fresh, clean scent helps buyers focus on your home—not your animals.

2. Repair Pet-Related Damage

Pets are wonderful, but they can be rough on a house over time. Before showings begin:

  • Touch up scratched walls or doors.

  • Replace chewed trim or baseboards.

  • Fill in yard holes and repair any pet-related landscaping damage.

Tamas’ Tip: Even minor wear and tear can give buyers the impression that the home hasn’t been well maintained. A little fixing goes a long way.

3. Hide the Evidence

Before showings or an open house, remove any signs that pets live there:

  • Hide food bowls, toys, and litter boxes.

  • Remove photos with pets from display.

  • Tuck away leashes, pet crates, and scratching posts.

Tamas’ Tip: I always recommend staging the home as neutrally as possible. Buyers need to imagine the space as theirs—not yours and your dog’s.

4. Remove Pets During Showings

Even the friendliest animals can be a distraction—or worse, a deal breaker. Some buyers may be scared of dogs, allergic to cats, or simply put off by animals being present.

  • Arrange for pets to stay with a friend or at a pet daycare during showings.

  • If that’s not possible, crate them securely in a quiet area and inform your Realtor.

Tamas’ Tip: As your Realtor, I’ll work with you to schedule showings around your pet’s routine. A little flexibility can keep your furry friend calm and your showings stress free.

5. Disclose Pet History Transparently

Honesty is key in real estate. If your pet has caused any major damage in the past—such as accidents that led to subfloor issues—disclose it. Transparency builds trust with buyers and helps avoid legal headaches later.

6. Enhance Outdoor Spaces

If you have a dog friendly backyard, make it shine! Highlight fenced areas, dog runs, or shade spots as potential value adds. A well kept yard is a selling point—especially for other pet lovers.

Tamas’ Tip: I’ve helped buyers fall in love with homes just because of a great backyard for their pup. Let’s market that asset the right way.

Final Thoughts

Selling a home with pets doesn’t have to be a hassle. With the right preparation and a smart strategy, you can present your property in the best light—without sidelining your four legged companions.

If you’re thinking of selling and wondering how to make the process smooth for you and your pets, I’d love to help.
